Heated soy and oat makers: grind, cook and clean in one cycle

A heated maker is a small sealed blender with a heating element in the base and a program button for each milk. Soy goes in dry or soaked and comes out cooked, which is the only safe way to drink it; oats, rice, walnuts and peanuts get their own cycles; most of them boil water and make hot cocoa too. The price is the filter, which is finer than a no-strain basket and needs rinsing every time, and the oat problem: oats blended hot go slimy, so the cards say which machines can grind cold.

Pick a size

They all grind and cook in the same jug. The size decides how often you run it and how much counter it takes. Why soy milk must be cooked explains the part the programs are for.

A cup or two

20 oz makers

Kidisle 6-in-1, Olayks, ChefWave Milkmade. Kettle-sized (the ChefWave is more coffee-machine-sized), 300 to 600 ml a cycle, a cup of nuts or beans at most. One serving at a time for coffee or breakfast; too small for a family's week.

A day's worth

32 to 42 oz makers

Kidisle 8-in-1, IAGREEA 35 and 42 oz, Joyoung DJ13U. A litre or so per cycle, delay start and keep-warm on most, hot and cold programs on the IAGREEAs. The household size.

The pitcher

51 oz makers

Kidisle 10-in-1. A litre and a half, an 8-hour keep-warm, ten programs. For soy by the jug and a counter that can give up the space.

Quick picks

The short answer for common situations. Each links to the full card below.

Compare the eight

Batch and programs from each maker's page where it publishes them; the budget brands mostly publish nothing beyond the listing and the cards say so. Cold grind means the machine has a room-temperature or raw cycle, which is what oat milk and smoothies want.

ChefWave Milkmade

Heated maker, six presets, glass pitcher, no bag

ChefWave Milkmade

ChefWave Milkmade Non-Dairy Milk Maker

The heated maker that behaves like a coffee machine: a water tank on the back, a grinding compartment, a glass pitcher under a dispensing valve. Six programs (almond, macadamia, soy, oat, cashew, coconut) steam and pre-soak the ingredients, grind them, and dispense; ChefWave's manual says the grind is fine enough that no nut milk bag is needed. It runs a seven-minute self-clean after every batch, and the manual says nuts and soybeans need no pre-soaking.

Suits: Someone who wants cooked soy or a warm almond milk in a glass pitcher with no straining, a batch or two a day, and a delay start for the morning.

Weigh: Everything is heated, oats included, so the oat milk is the thick kind. Batches are 10 or 20 oz. The company's own website has gone; the manual (hosted by a retailer) is the spec sheet, and support was an email address. One-year warranty per the manual.

Weigh: Kidisle publishes no spec sheet; every figure here is from the listing, and listings disagree on the size. The jug is rinsed by hand, never in the dishwasher. The grind is not a filter: strain for smooth almond milk.

Joyoung DJ13U-G91 Soymilk Maker

Joyoung DJ13U-G91 Automatic Soy Milk Maker, 900 to 1300 ml

Joyoung built the soy milk machine category in China and this is its US-voltage 1.3 L model: ultra-fine grinding with no filter to wash, a soy program that grinds and boils in one cycle, presets for time and temperature, and a warming function. Soy first, then grains and nut milks.

What the makers claim, and what to make of it

The budget heated makers are close relatives: a stainless jug, a base with a blade and a heating plate, a touch panel of programs, and a self-clean cycle that is a hot rinse with a little dish soap. The program counts ("6-in-1", "8-in-1", "10-in-1") mostly add hot drinks and porridge to the same grinder, and the cards list what each program is. Joyoung is the exception in pedigree: it has made soy milk machines for the Chinese market for decades and its programs are built around soy first.

The checkable claims are batch size, wattage, programs, what the jug and filter are made of, and whether a cold or raw cycle exists. The listings' review counts and "amazing" copy are not specs. Oat milk is the test: a machine with no cold cycle will make it slimy, and the oat guide says how to work around that.
